The work was written in 1874 for violinistPablo Sarasate, and premiered inParison February 7, 1875.
Although called a “SpanishSymphony”it is considered aviolin concertoby musicians today. The piece hasSpanish motifsthroughout, and launched a period when Spanish-themed music came into vogue.
TheSymphonie espagnoleis one of Lalo’s two most often played works, the other being hisCello Concertoin D minor.
