Description

Johann Tichy (1809-1871) was a pupil of Franz Soboll, based in Olomouc, a Moravian province in what is now the Czech Republic. His work is distinctively Bohemian and sometimes follows that of Homolka, altogether fine and elegant in craftsmanship.

Tichy made this violin in 1846, perhaps at the peak of his career, imbuing it with a shape that belies its size; with a back length of 353mm. It remains in an exemplary state of preservation for 175 years of use and has been well maintained throughout its long life, with a voice that can be described as characteristically mellow, sweet, but still clear, articulate, and powerful.
