The collection of piano pieces was created in 1908 and 1909, at the beginning of Bartók’s teaching as a professor of piano at theFranz Liszt Music AcademyinBudapest.The relatively short pieces are based on melodies from Hungarian andSlovakfolk music and have an educational character.There are a total of 85 arrangements for beginners of piano playing, which were published in four issues by the Budapest music publisherKároly Rozsnyai.The first two volumes are based on Hungarian, the other two on Slovakian children’s and folk songs.Two pieces of the fourth issue were compositions byEmma Kodály.The level of difficulty increases from the well-known children’s songsSüssünk, süssünk valamitandSüss fel napin the first issue to theKanásztáncin the second issue, which is a difficult challenge for a beginner at the piano.The Slovakian song texts belonging to the music, which can be found in the appendix to the music book, were translated by Bartók into Hungarian and Emma Kodály into German.The pieces represent the first compositional results of Bartók’s folk music research. The places of origin of the melodies were also given in the appendix.
